Chardonnay? Isn’t that the all-purpose-sorte, often met in average wines from overseas? On one hand: Yes. Anyhow, if it is put in the right place, as we have put it on the calcareous soil, where it thrives like nowhere else, then it matures - especially on old vines (ours are almost 25 years old ) - to peak forms and allows to yield wines, expressing the character of the vineyard, like few others. And that's, why we treasure it!

Dr. Fritz Zweigelt is the father of the 1922 evented crossing of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent, which made it within a few years - out of nothing - to the most successful red wine variety in Austria. Originally, the sort was named Rotburger, but was renamed to 'Zweigelt' in 1975, in order to avoid confusion with the existing 'Blauburger'. Here, it solely roots on sites with mild humus layer, where it matures to maximum performance. At the same time it is, next to the Blaufränkisch, the most important partner for our cuvées.
